The Black Moods
Josh Kennedy: Singer/guitarist
Chico Diaz: Drums
Brenden McBride: Bass
Tempe, Arizona-based rock trio The Black Moods have returned with a fiery new single, “Suit Yourself,” as they progress toward a new EP due out this fall. The track is a punchy, blues-infused anthem that captures the band’s signature mix of classic rock grit and modern edge.
With roaring guitars, driving percussion, and Kennedy’s raspy vocals leading the charge, the song is a sonic middle finger to conformity.
The chorus hits hard with a rebellious hook that’s both catchy and cathartic — especially to Kennedy.
“To me, it’s a song about pushing ahead no matter what and not letting anyone or anything drag you down,” Kennedy said. “Lyrically, I wrote it hoping it would help me practice what I preach.”
Known for their relentless touring and powerful live shows, The Black Moods have carved out a loyal following across the United States.
“Suit Yourself” continues their streak of high-energy releases, following previous hits like “Sugar” and “Heaven.”
With a new album on the horizon, this single sets the tone for what promises to be a bold and uncompromising chapter in their journey.
“Sugar” is a masterclass in seductive rock ‘n’ roll. Kennedy describes it as “one of the sexiest songs we’ve written,” and it’s easy to see why. The track pulses with a slow-burning groove, anchored by Kennedy’s smoky vocals, Diaz’s tight drumming, and McBride’s bass lines that slink through the mix like a desert rattlesnake.
The lyrics are equally evocative, painting a picture of passion laced with danger. Lines like “Don’t forget I’m kinda crazy, cinematic, a little magic” hint at a volatile romance, wrapped in drama and allure.
To match the song’s sultry vibe, The Black Moods released a visually arresting music video directed by Michael Levine (known for work with Skillet and Peyton Parrish). Filmed at Rawhide Western Town in Chandler, Arizona, the video reimagines a classic bank heist with a twist, blending spaghetti western aesthetics with rock star bravado.
Recently, The Black Moods welcomed renowned Phoenix musician, bassist McBride, into the fold.
“Brenden McBride is like a shot in the arm for us,” Kennedy said.
“Finally, having him in the band reminds us why we do this in the first place. There are no limits when it comes to working with him and I think that’s why we’ve grown so much in this past year. We had been trying to get him to join us for a long time and the stars just finally aligned.”
The tracks are sneak previews of The Black Moods’ upcoming album and a statement about their new lineup. While “Heaven” leaned into melodic introspection, “Sugar” swings the pendulum back toward gritty sensuality and blues-drenched riffs. Together, the two tracks suggest a dynamic and diverse album on the horizon.
The Black Moods are on the road previewing tracks for fans. Having previously shared stages with legends like ZZ Top, Rick Springfield and Collective Soul, the trio continues to build momentum as one of the most exciting live acts in modern rock.
